You’re Invited to Share the Easter Celebrations at St. Paul’s Today and Tomorrow

April 19, 2014

Jesus Christ is risen today, alleluia!
  our triumphant holy day, alleluia!
who did once, upon the cross, alleluia!
suffer to redeem our loss. Alleluia!

But the pains which he endured, alleluia!
  our salvation have procured, alleluia!
now above the sky he’s king, alleluia!
where the angels ever sing. Alleluia!
(Lyrica Davidica, 1708, alt.)

This year, we’re wonderfully blessed to have four awesome Easter Services celebrating the Resurrection of Our Lord!

At 8:30 p.m. today, Easter Eve, we’ll be joining Christians throughout the world, such as these pictured above in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, in celebrating the Great Vigil of Easter. Some special features of this Service of Holy Eucharist will be lighting the new fire; processing the Paschal Candle; lighting our own candles from its flame; hearing the singing of the Exsultet and the refrains of our Hand Bell Choir (“the Ding-a-lings”), experiencing (hypoallergenic) incense; and renewing our Baptismal Vows.

At sunrise (6:29 a.m.) tomorrow, Easter Day, we’re gathering at our beautiful 129 year old Midnapore Chapel (just West of Bannister Road on 146th Avenue SE), with its restored steeple (as you can see from the above photo, even including the 1885 weather vane on top, which was put back this morning) and re-shingled roof, for a Sunrise Service of Morning Prayer. The sun comes in through the stained glass just as we begin our Service. It’s an awesome way to begin Easter morning!

We’ll then head back to our main (7 Sunmills Green S.E.) building, to have hot cross buns together. And at 8:30 and 10:00 a.m., we’ll be sharing Services of Holy Eucharist.  At 8:30 a.m., the Service will be in the traditional words of the Book of Common Prayer. At 10:00 a.m. it will be in the modern language of the Book of Alternative Services. Both Services will feature our singing the great hymns of Easter, such as “Jesus Christ is Risen Today.” And after both 8:30 and 10:00 Services, we’ll enjoy fellowship over hot cross buns, coffee, tea, and juice.

There’ll be other special features, too! Our Hand Bell Choir will be playing after the 8:30 Service, and in our 10:00 Service. At the 10:00 Service, there’ll be Nursery and Sunday School, with an Easter egg hunt! And the 10:00 Service will also feature two short videos on our new screens, and a special anthem by our Choir.

A word about Holy Eucharist (Holy Communion): At each Holy Eucharist, we say that everyone’s invited to come forward and partake. We really mean this! The only requirement for receiving Holy Communion is wanting more of Jesus in your life. When we receive Holy Communion, we all come with empty hands, and Our Lord, whose heart is overflowing with love for us, gives us himself in a new, wonderful, precious, and unique way.
