A Litany for All Saints’ Day

November 1, 2013

Leader: Our eternal God, we lift our voices as your saints in united prayer to you: For our brothers and sisters in your family throughout the world, who walk in your love, and by their faithful obedience and steadfast hope show the same mind that was in Christ Jesus, especially those you have placed on our hearts to remember before you today, whom we lift up to you now, either silently or aloud (Silence).
God of all the saints,
People: we give you thanks and praise.

Leader: For those who have been Baptized at St. Paul’s since All Saints’ of last year, and joined the family of the Church in the path of discipleship: Victory Aneto, Aiden D’Arcy, Jason Gosselin, David Hutchinson, Rowan Mack, Kolten Pain, John Rogers, David Sowale, and Joeross Tino.
God of all the saints,
People: we give you thanks and praise.

Leader: For your unending love for those who have ended their earthly pilgrimage, whom we have committed at St. Paul’s into your loving arms since All Saints’ of last year: Margaret Anderson, Donald Buchanan, Edwina Eggleston, Ben Filpula, Doug Irwin, Joy James, Tony Martin, Barbara Morrison, Brent Smith, Robinson Taylor, and Richard Vosburgh.
God of all the saints,
People: we give you thanks and praise.

Leader: For the safe-keeping of all our loved ones who have died in your tender care, whom we now name before you, silently or out loud (Silence).
Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord,
People: and let light perpetual shine upon them.

Leader: May their souls, and the souls of all the departed, through your mercy, rest in peace.
People: Amen.

Leader: God of all the saints, your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, by dying for us, conquered death and by rising again, restored life. May we then go forward eagerly to meet him, and after our life on earth be reunited with our brothers and sisters where every tear will be wiped away. We ask this through the same Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.

In our Prayers at St. Paul’s this Sunday, we’ll especially be remembering the “saints at St. Paul’s” whom we’ve Baptized since All Saints’ Day last year (including three dear children – David Hutchinson, David Soweto, and Joeross Tino – whom we’re Baptizing at our 10 a.m. Service), or committed into Our Lord’s eternal keeping. Print copies of the Litany in this posting will be available on the magazine rack in the Hall.

The image immediately above is of the North Rose Window at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. It will enlarge if you click on it twice. This image makes me think of the definition of a saint that says, “A saint is someone the light shines through.”

Embedded below are the “Te Deum” and the hymn, “For All the Saints.” We’ll be saying the former and singing the latter at both Services this Sunday.

  1. Thank you. I developed a litany off of your wonderful work. Blessings.

    • That’s great, Mark! Thank you for taking the time to offer the encouraging comment! I pray for God’s blessings to be poured out on and through you, also.
