We Have Two Opportunities to Serve in Our Community on June 8

June 5, 2013

This Saturday, June 8, we have two opportunities to reach out in our community as the “Church at Work,” as part of a city-wide event called “Serve Day.”

We’ll gather at St. Paul’s at 9:30 a.m., at which time, some of us will go off to look for garbage to pick up in our immediate neighbourhood – including our own grounds, Sundance-on-the-Green, the strip mall, and Centennial High School. Garbage bags will be provided, but please bring your own gloves.

The rest of us will drive over to Acadia Place, the 58-unit affordable housing complex for families who were at risk of or experiencing homelessness. Acadia Place is in initiative of KAIROS Calgary (representing 10 denominations and around 130 churches) and the Calgary Homeless Foundation (CHF), as part of the 10 year plan in Calgary to end homelessness. June 8 is a “Spring Clean-up” day at Acadia Place. From 10 a.m. to 12 noon, assistance is needed with sweeping the parking lot, raking the lawn, cleaning the win-dow wells, and painting bike racks. If possible, please bring shovels, rakes, big brooms, a few wheel barrows and gloves. Please phone the Office at 403-256-1428 or email me at, by Friday noon, if you’re planning to help at Acadia Place, so that I can give them an idea of how many of us will be coming.

We’ll all meet back together at St. Paul’s for a pizza lunch around 12:15, courtesy of our neighbours (who’ll have a sparkling-clean parking lot!), Canadian Pizza Unlimited. St. Paul’s will cover the cost of the pizza as a way of saying “Thank you” for reaching out to serve our community with Our Lord’s love.

Embedded below is a video with information about Acadia Place. You can also access Acadia Place’s website by clicking here.

While you’re serving in the community, you’re invited to wear one of the stylish T-shirts pictured in this posting. The front of the T-shirt has the crest with St. Paul’s logo on it, on the left breast, and “Church at Work” on the back. There are two sizes available, M and XL, both for $10. Shirts can be picked up any time, including Saturday morning, from St. Paul’s.

JUNE 8 UPDATE: Thank you to all our Serve Day crew (including Arturo Bitos and Suzanne Wray, who aren’t in the above pictures) for all your excellent work raking leaves and picking up garbage!
