Today at St. Paul’s We Shared an All Souls’ Day Service of Light

November 2, 2012

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis (Rest eternal grant unto them, O Lord, and let light perpetual shine upon them). Amen.

Today at St. Paul’s, we shared an All Souls’ Day Service, to commemorate the faithful departed. At this Service, we remembered our hope of the Dawn to come, and how the One who is the Light of the world comes to us in our darkness, and walks beside us, never leaving nor forsaking us, and brings us safely home. We committed into our Lord’s eternal keeping our departed loved ones, and the following members of our Parish family, who went to be with the Lord this past year: Jim Blevins, Carroll Eggertson, Elton Hellyer, Wes Hollings, Sherry Lewis, Tony Martin, Len Mountford, Olive Ponting, Bill Styba, and Irene Ullyott.

The following prayers are adapted from today’s Service:

Our living God, you created us for life and happiness. We trust your promise that you will not give us up to death, but give us eternal life.
Lord of life, hear your people.

For the dead in our family and our community, for all those who were dear to us in life, we pray that you, who called them by their names, may be their unending joy.
Lord of life, hear your people.

For all those who suffered much in life from sickness, injustice or poverty, we pray that their sorrow may now come to an end, and that there may be no end to their happiness.
Lord of life, hear your people.

For the dead who travelled a lonely way through life, because none or few cared for them, or because they were loners themselves, or because their children or partners deserted them; for those whom nobody mourns, we pray that now they may discover the joy of the friendship of the saints in heaven.
Lord of life, hear your people.

And finally for ourselves, we pray that we may help and support one another on the journey through life, that we may go your way side by side, and share joys and sorrows, life and death.
Lord of life, hear our prayer.

God of life, we thank you for the assurance that the dead are in your hands, and that we are called and destined to eternal life through your risen Son, Jesus. In the midst of the darkness with which we struggle, shine the light of your love, as the firstfruits of the promised Dawn, and bring us all safely home, with you and one another forever, bright shining as the sun. This we ask through the One who is the Light of the world, even Christ our Lord.
Amen.
