“Forever Young” – A Father’s Day Blessing by Bob Dylan

June 22, 2012

In early 1972, Bob Dylan was thirty years old, and perhaps sensing the passage of time in his own life, composed the following song for his infant son, Jakob, entitled “Forever Young.” Its tender sentiments, tuneful melody, and poetic imagery make it one of Dylan’s most beloved songs today (these words of introduction were adapted from Edward Hoffman, ed., The Book of Father’s Wisdom, page 206):

May God bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others,
and let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
and climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
And, may you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous.
May you grow up to be true.
May you always know the truth
and see the light surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong.
And, may you stay forever young

Forever young. Forever young.
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy.
May your feet always be swift.
May you have a strong foundation
when the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful.
And may your song always be sung.
And, may you stay forever young.

Forever young. forever young.
May you stay forever young.

The lyrics of “Forever Young” were one of our Father’s Day Reflections at our 8:30 and 10:00 Services on June 17. The Book of Father’s Wisdom and several other Father’s Day books can be borrowed from the Book Nook outside my office.
