A Call to Seek God’s Guidance in the Election of Our New Bishop

May 9, 2012

[At the Diocesan Synod on June 16, we shall be electing the new Bishop for our Diocese. I invite us to offer the following prayers as part of our collective seeking of God’s will:]

Gracious God, we praise you for inspiring the search committee members to present an honest, vibrant image of this diocese in the diocesan profile they put together. We ask for the committee to have the discernment they need to seek clarification, if it’s needed, and for guidance in selecting the slate of candidates for the Episcopal election. Now that the nominations are in, we lift up the nominees as they prayerfully prepare to respond to the questions they will be asked and the situations they will encounter. May your Holy Spirit protect and encourage everyone involved in the process of calling the 9th bishop of the Diocese of Calgary. In the name of Jesus, Amen. (

Almighty God, giver of all good gifts, look on your Church with grace, and guide the minds of those who shall choose a Bishop for this Diocese, that we may receive a faithful servant who will care for your people and support us in our ministries; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (BAS, p. 676).

June 2 UPDATE:

The five candidates for Bishop are, in alphabetical order: the Rt. Rev’d Greg Kerr-Wilson, the Rev’d Dr. Richard LeSueur, the Very Rev’d Dr. Ian Luke, the Rev’d Canon Gene Packwood, and the Ven. Ansley Tucker. We pray for God’s blessings to be poured out upon them, and continue to ask for God to equip, and give wisdom to the Synod Delegates to choose, the candidate God desires to serve our Diocese as Bishop.

To help in the discernment process, the Diocese has produced a DVD of the candidates answering a number of questions. We shall be showing this at St. Paul’s on our large screen in the Sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 13. Everyone is invited to come and get to know the person who will be our next Bishop a little better.
