A Reflection on Emmaus and Earth Day

April 24, 2012

The Road to Emmaus story tells of God’s creative power. Jesus’ Resurrection is Day One of the new creation, giving life, and energy. The passage starts with the disciples completely discouraged and devoid of hope. Life has been sucked out of them. In the advancing darkness, death reigns supreme. The passage ends with joy, energy, and overflowing life to share.

We are God’s creation. As 1 John 3:1 reminds us, we are God’s beloved children. This Earth Day, let’s live as who we are. Let’s allow God’s creative energy, which raised Our Lord from the grave, to fill and empower us to affirm and spread life and creative power and energy in the world of our fellow-creatures, all of whom are also loved by God – so that Earth Day, and every day, can be an Easter story of the life and love of Jesus shared by us all, for Jesus’ sake. Amen.

(This is adapted from a reflection at our Triple C Service on April 22. It took place immediately after what we called “An Interview with Cleopas” and immediately before the video embedded below, which we watched to help us continue reflecting on the beauty of God’s creation and our opportunity to share and affirm life as God’s beloved.)
