A Prayer for Animals in Honour of St. Francis of Assisi

October 4, 2011

Today is the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, a day on which Blessing Services for animals are held in many places. In the spirit of St. Francis, I invite us to pray the following prayer of blessing over each of our animals today:

Blessed are you, Lord God, Maker of all living creatures. On the fifth and sixth days of creation, you called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all animals his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this animal. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. We ask in the Name of the One who with joy became our fellow-creature, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you have people who will exclude any of God’s creatures
from the shelter of compassion and pity,
you will have people who deal likewise with their fellow human beings.
(St. Francis of
Assisi, 1181/82-1226)
