News, Links, and Prayers for This Week

October 4, 2011

Honour your father and your mother.
(Exodus 20:12a)

There are 5 news items, 6 links, and 6 prayer requests for this week.

October 3 to 7:
Laura Anne is away for this week. While LA is away, please leave all phone messages for me.

October 9:

This Sunday, October 9, we shall celebrate Thanksgiving together. Fittingly, this Sunday will also mark the beginning of our 5 week Fall Stewardship focus. Everyone is invited to bring fruit and vegetables to decorate the Sanctuary and then be shared after the Services with the people who are served by the Mustard Seed.

October 12:

The DVD Study “Christianity and World Religions,” our first Adult Christian Education offering of the Fall, begins on this date. For more information, please see the September 26 posting entitled “Adult Christian Ed in October: Christianity and World Religions.”

A video snippet of Hamilton talking about other religions and salvation through Jesus is embedded below:

October 16:

Pray for one another, so that you may be healed.
(James 5:16)

“I was hungry and you gave me food.”
(Matthew 25:35)

This will be our celebration of St. Luke’s Day, and will feature a special focus on healing. October 16 is also World Food Day, so our Stewardship reflection will focus on sharing God’s gifts so that we can all experience healing together.

October 23:

On October 1, at the end of our Diocesan Synod, Bishop Derek announced that he will be retiring at the end of this year. So we are especially delighted to be able to have him come and officiate one last time as our Diocesan at our 8:30 and 10:00 Services on October 23. We thank the Lord for Derek’s nearly 40 years of ministry as Deacon, Priest, and Bishop, and we pray for his blessings to be poured out without measure upon Derek and Pauline as they enter retirement. Our Bishop’s Pastoral Letter announcing his retirement was read at both
Services on October 2. The text of this letter can be accessed at (Two weeks ago, I said that Zachary Brisbin would be Confirmed at the 10:00 Service, but Zach’s Confirmation has now been postponed till the new year.)

At 7:30 p.m., everyone is invited back to St. Paul’s share simple and beautiful Taize worship together, led by our Assistant, Norman.

Remember: This part of the blog is for new prayers or prayer-emphases this week. The complete Prayer List is included on the back cover of the weekly Order of Service. If you are unable to attend on a Sunday, and would like to have these prayers emailed to you, please email Laura Anne at

This week, we pray for Our Lord’s healing touch upon Ken Brightman, Kevin (Sheila O’Shea’s nephew), Mary Lee, Gail Lowry (Anne’s mother), Emma Lewis (Dorothy’s granddaughter), Kathy Marcine, Ed Mullaney (who is preparing for surgery at the end of this month), Louise Mullaney, Sheila Orr, and Marlene Wright.

We continue to pray for comfort for Anita Powell and all the family, in their bereavement at the passing into eternal life of Anita’s mother.

We continue to unite in praying for the needs for safety and food to be met for all those in the Horn of Africa; and commit ourselves to being part of the answer to this prayer.

We pray for wisdom and courage to act for the leaders of the world as they seek global economic recovery.

We pray for peace in Africa and the Middle East, particularly between the people of Palestine and Israel, and in the nations of Libya and Syria.

And we give thanks especially for the improving health of Ken Brightman, Simon Evans, Kevin, Gail Lowry, Kathy Marcine, Sheila Orr, and Marlene Wright.

God bless you all, always.

Your Brother in Jesus,
