Reflection on John 14:6 (from May 22 Homily)

May 28, 2011

Jesus is saying is life is like Mt. Hua in China. The journey to the top of Mt. Hua is known as one of the most beautiful and most dangerous hikes in the world. Until 1998, there was only one path up Mt. Hua, and it was called “the way.” If you wanted to climb the mountain, you would be well-advised to take this path, rather than trying to find or make another.

Jesus says he knows the way to the Father’s house, because he has come from there. But note that in this passage, Jesus is not saying, “This is the way. Do this and that, and you’ll get there.” He says, “I am the way. You don’t have to know the way there. But I do, and I plan to journey with you and make sure you arrive safely. You are my beloved, and I plan to be with you always, to share my very life with you, starting right now, and continuing forever.”
